The Human-Centered Classroom
Over the past few years, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to keep my classroom human-centered. When I write it like that, my concern might seem a little silly. Of course school is about human beings—what else would it be centered on? On the other hand, humanist critics have long worried that school is anti-human, and in an age of machine learning and artificial intelligence, these concerns are even more pointed. I hope that by coming back to the idea of human development, by thinking always about how to keep the humanities human, I can help my students to grow into the human beings they want to be. I look forward to exploring these issues over the course of the school year—probably writing once a week or so, mostly for my own edification.
